Volkswagen presently have a couple of SUV models, but in the near future German Automaker is considering an expansion in its line-up with a vision of taking over the Toyota Motor Corp.
Insiders said that in next few years Volkswagen will introduce as many as six models of midsized Touareg and compact Tiguan but the sources asked not to be identified before an official announcement from Volkswagen.
Global demand for Sport utility vehicles is increasing with every passing day. It was 17.6 percent in 2012 and is likely to increase to 20.1 percent in 2018, said PwC consulting company. In the past years Volkswagen was famous in Europe for its traditional cars such as Golf, Passat, and Polo, but in the global market, the SUV offerings rank way higher than traditional cars and rivals have wide range of models in the same class.
Roman Mathyssek, is an analyst at Strategy Engineers GmbH consulting company and he stated that “The SUV division is still growing in the global markets, and it’s a major segment for all auto manufacturers,” and the VW still has the potential in SUV segment and can grow with a larger line-up, which could particularly help them to build a muscular position in the globally emerging markets and US.”
Tiguan will get an update package as a lighter vehicle in 2015, to reduce fuel consumption, and Volkswagen is also making a coupe version and longer option of the model. A subcompact crossover is also in development phase, which has features of an SUV and conventional car, deciding between the Tiguan and coupe-like T-Roc prototypes displayed at recent auto shows, said internal sources.
