You cannot ensure that the diesel or several other fuels will be treated equally and the customers are aware of the benefits and drawbacks to every alternative to petrol power. One of the most effective ways is to compare a new fuel to another that consumers are familiar with. That’s why a group of advocates from natural gas retailers, businesses and users are proposing new units for fuel alternative; the Diesel Gallon Equivalent (DGE).
In the haulage and freight industry, diesel is the most used fuel, but it is hard to compare with natural gas, that has different properties, benefits and drawbacks.
It is very hard to convert people from diesel to natural gas powered vehicles because they use what they know better. DGE is the unit that will help people to convert by comparing the diesel with natural gas on similar properties and customers will be in position to make a well informed decision when gas will cover all their desires.
Vice president of Natural gas alliance, Amy Farrell said it a good direction that is reliable and understandable. Since 1994, the natural gas industry is working with National Conference of Weights and Measures (NCWM) on selling gas on petrol equailant gallons and now after two decades industry cites as successful example that has helped customers make decision.
The industry also hopes a diesel standard that means greater consistency in taxes. There are several states which are already using the DGE formula for heavy duty vehicles and enjoying the benefits of clean environment through reduced carbon emissions.
