To fight against the sales dominance of Audi A3 and Mercedes CLA, BMW’s latest weapon is in form of a four-door saloon, this compact saloon concept – powered by either a diesel engine or the petrol one – was unveiled last week.
The rumours about the use of Mini platform for several of BMW’s new FWD/AWD vehicles was out for quite some time and finally things seem to make sense.
Currently, BMW is offers 2 Series Coupe in a small, rear-wheel drive, turbocharged form which is highly appreciated by a vast majority of car enthusiasts.
So it’s a completely different approach adopted by BMW this time in an anticipation of capturing more and more sales in this segment.
Well, the 2 Series is admired and appreciated highly of what it is, although the 1 Series hatchback has been put to front-wheel drive system and it seems a logical step somehow, but putting the rear-wheel drive 2 Series Coupe and Cabriolet under same treatment is highly controversial. That’s not it, company’s future 3, 5, 6 and 7 Series models were supposed to be built on the next-generation rear-wheel drive platform.
The RWD architecture was later dubbed CLAR – short of Cluster Architecture – which was initially codenamed “35up”.
It’s a big question at the moment but it is expected to be met with a strong backlash as BMW community might not like the idea.
