Rolls Royce still believes that the German V12 engines are reliable and they will keep using German built engines. They have also abandoned their plans to bring its entire engine production to UK. Rolls Royce announced that the use of German built engines will continue in their exclusive models. They further confess that it is not a wise decision to invest in UK production facility like its rival Bentley, which is producing its flagship W12 engines in the UK.
Rolls Royce production head at Goodwood production facility said; “To make reliable engines, you need lots of capability and expertise, at the moment the best place to source the V12 is from Germany”
Rolls Royce has increased their car output by 3300 units last year and it was clearly because of the unveiling of Wraith Coupe. This number of production units has strengthened the Goodwood as the prime user of V12 engines in BMW group.
Although, all parts used in the Rolls Royce phantom 6.8 litre engines naturally aspirated V12, 6.6 Litre twin turbo for Ghost or even in the Wraith are very unique, but they are still utilise some basic hardware from BMW V engines. These parts are also developed alongside the BMW visions, but it is learning process for development programme to support Rolls Royce lower production volume. The plans to move from Goodwood to UK were just because of land availability, but they require more land to add more facilities to the site to cope with demands, production and definitely development.
Has Rolls Royce made the right decision? What effects this may have on UK Automobile Engineering?
