Drivers suffered major rush-hour delays today after three lanes of the M25 collapsed following roadworks in heavy rain. Three lanes of the M25 in Surrey have been closed after a section of the motorway collapsed following after overnight roadworks. The collapse left a large pothole.
There was a puncture galore at the Leatherhead junction following massive potholes after the roadworks fell in during heavy rain at about 05:30 GMT. Highways workers are clearing concrete debris from the anti-clockwise carriageway near Junction nine.
The Highways Agency spokesman said, “We are trying to find out from out the road contractor what is going on but at the moment we just know there is a defect,” A two hour delay has been reported with queues back to Junction 13 for Staines. The exit slip road at Junction nine is also closed.
Surrey Roads Police tweeted: “Not sure why it’s failed but there were overnight repairs in that area last night.” The Environment Agency issued 20 flood alerts across the South East, the West, the Midlands and Pembrokeshire in Wales.
The Highways Agency said police and repair specialists were at the scene but advised is to use alternative routes. They said delays were expected to last for many hours. People going to Gatwick have also been caught up in the travel chaos and an accident also closed one lane on the clockwise carriageway between Clacket Lane Services and Junction six for Godstone earlier.
