It’s about 40 years from now when first Golf was introduced in the market and with the passage of time, seven generations passed away. Every generation of the Golf has left its footprints on the auto market. The journey of performance which was started about 40 years ago with the first ever GTi, now after about four decades, it has a crucial position on the performance maps.
It all started with the power delivery and different type of engines introduced. Even today, there are three to choose from, even in the standard trim.
An updated 2.0 TSI engine is capable of producing 260bhp which is almost 30bhp extra than its preceding version which was offered in the GTI performance pack.
After this 2.0 TSI engine, there is a performance version as well. It is a bit larger engine and will offer 300bhp. It has an electronic front differential and larger brakes.
These figures make it an ultimate GTi, but the Club sport is still top of the range with 325bhp, however Golf R400 is a wonder car with 400bhp. It has a firm chassis set-up with more aggressive styling. All these three versions will be available in the MK8 Golf.
Volkswagen has stated that all three trims will be front wheel drive because of the GTi label. There is a choice of six-speed manual and DSG automatic transmissions available to suit the customer needs.
The new DSG transmission is much better than the six or seven-speed manual transmissions but it’s not more than the world’s first ever 10-speed twin clutch gearbox developed by the Germans for Volkswagen Golf.
It is very similar in size and weight with the present seven-speed DSG and compatible with the most modern MQB architecture. Along with the reduced fuel figures, the new transmission is capable of handling more than 550Nm of torque. It will be exclusively available on the Mk8 Golf GTI, Golf GTD and Golf R.
